FAQs

How much does it cost for services?

Many of the services we provide—such as the Dollar Energy Application and the Free Eyeglass Program are available free of charge. Others, such as our After-School Program, have minimal costs ($50 per month for a single child and a sliding scale for additional children). If you have any questions on the programs offered by The NorthShore Community Alliance, contact us at info@ncapgh.org.

Are there income guidelines for NCA programs?

For some programs, yes, and they are covered by the Federal Government Poverty Income Guidelines. Programs administered by Allegheny County Office of Community Services are determined by the Department of Public Welfare eligibility requirements. For more information on whether you are eligible for specific programs, contact us at info@ncapgh.org.

Do you have to live on the North Side in order to participate?

For some programs, there are no residency requirements. However, for the Family Life Education Program you must be a North Side resident, and you must commit to a weekly one-hour meeting with one of our family care consultants.

Do you offer money or food stipends?

We will register families with various community food banks and connect families to a wide range of programs to address their needs. Additionally, we can provide vouchers that can be redeemed for food at Giant Eagle or Wal-Mart stores.

Do you offer drug/alcohol treatment?

No, but we can refer you to a number of community partners who specialize in substance use disorder issues. We also provide on-site screening services to determine compliance for treatment programs.

Can you help me find housing?

We also partner with agencies like The Urban League, The Housing Authority of Allegheny County and numerous community resource centers to help you find a safe and comfortable place to live.

Do you offer child care?

No, but we can assist you in obtaining child care through the Child Care Partnership, the YMCA and other providers who offer this service.

Can you help me get medical assistance?

We can help with completing the application and assist in the appeal process if you are denied coverage by the Department of Public Welfare.

Are you part of CYF?

No, we are independent from CYF, but we are that agency’s third-largest provider of in-home services in Allegheny County. As such, we know how CYF functions, enabling us to be a strong advocate for your needs within the system.

Do you provide transportation?

We can assist with transportation, as well as make referrals to Access and help you obtain bus passes.

How long can I be involved with the agency?

Each program has specific timelines, from 30 days to two years. Your NCA family care consultant can help you determine the guidelines for the programs in which you are enrolled. Contact us at info@ncapgh.org if you have questions.
